MakeTank, a relatively new BSA committee, focuses on ‘maker culture’ and how to incorporate it into the design process. Instead of hosting monthly presentations at BSA Space, the committee gets their collective hands dusty every year by designing and building a demonstration pavilion for ABX.

Last year MakeTank designed and built a pavilion for the ABX expo. The pavilion highlights a unique approach to crowdsourced digital fabrication and material research. The team strived to push the boundaries of conventional computer modeling and analysis while simultaneously
coupling it with physical prototyping and experimentation of new material applications. This cross-pollination of digital and analog environments facilitated the production of a flexible structure that has the ability to accommodate different forms, functions, and responses to environmental stimuli.

This year at ABX/Greenbuild the MakeTank team is investigating similar aspects as the prior year researching composite materials, and a playful, adaptable design.

However, this year the driving focus will be on minimal assembly and minimal waste, likely using industrial or designer felt as the primary material.

Watch a video showing the process of designing and building last year’s pavillon.
